Topical records by Bluegrass musicians have always been scarce, and really good ones downright rare; though this is not Bluegrass, it's by an artist closely related to the genre, and it's a gem. Rowan --who has shown a tendency to delve into these subjects before --gets heavily into various aspects of the Dust Bowl era: the Southwest, the Depression years, Indian life; his fascination with these topics is certainly conveyed to the listener here. Amazingly, every one of the 12 songs is a Rowan original, and it's uniformly good, strong material. Equally remarkable is Rowan's ability to create such a fascinating and listenable album with only his own guitar accompaniment --lots of interesting, tasteful and imaginative acoustic guitar work here. An unusually successful solo record, highly recommended to any Rowan fan. THE HARVEST, TUMBLEWEED, RAINMAKER, etc
