Topical records by Bluegrass musicians have always been scarce, and really good ones downright rare; though this is not Bluegrass, it’s by an artist closely related to the genre, and it’s a gem. Rowan—who has shown a tendency to delve into these subjects before—gets heavily into various aspects of the Dust Bowl era: the Southwest, the Depression years, Indian life; his fascination with these topics is certainly conveyed to the listener here. Amazingly, every one of the 12 songs is a Rowan original, and it’s uniformly good, strong material. Equally remarkable is Rowan’s ability to create such a fascinating and listenable album with only his own guitar accompaniment—lots of interesting, tasteful and imaginative acoustic guitar work here. An unusually successful solo record, highly recommended to any Rowan fan. THE HARVEST, TUMBLEWEED, RAINMAKER, etc
