DOC WATSON 'The Essential Doc Watson'

Much of—it not most of—this album was recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 and 1964, under the direction of Ralph Rinzler, who (along with record collector Eugene Earle) had just recently “discovered” Watson, who at that time was only locally known around his home in Deep Gap, N.C. It has been a great story since that time, with thousands of people introduced to the warm, honest & skilful treatment of old time songs & tunes by Doc, who was soon joined by his son Merle and eventually put out several dozen albums—all of them good to great. There’s a lot of wonderful music on this generous 26 track disc, which originally was sold as a 2-LP set when it first came out. There are many magnificent performances of such great Watson favorites as BEAUMONT RAG, WAY DOWNTOWN, COUNTRY BLUES, BLUE RAILROAD TRAIN, TOM DOOLEY, LITTLE OMIE WISE, RISING SUN BLUES, RAMBLING HOBO, and BLACK MOUNTAIN RAG. A great and important CD.
