ItÕs great to see more of Doc WatsonÕs early work come to the surface, especially when itÕs so nicely produced & packaged as here, done by WatsonÕs long-time label Sugar Hill. Most of the cuts here date to 1962 & 1964 & were recorded shortly after WatsonÕs ÒdiscoveryÓ by Eugene Earle & Ralph Rinzler. There are some Watson solos (not very different from the way he sounds today), plus cuts with Gaither Carlton on fiddle, other family recordings with Rosa Lee and his older brother Arnold. Similar to the Watson Family recordings on Smithsonian-Folkways, this is a lovely addition to the great Watson legacy. RYE COVE, FISHERÕS HORNPIPE, MY WANDERING BOY, HONEY BABE, TINY BROKEN HEART, JUST A FRIEND, LONELY TOMBS, OLD DAVEY DUGGER, WHEN THE ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER. 16 cuts.
