It’s great to see more of Doc Watson’s early work come to the surface, especially when it’s so nicely produced & packaged as here, done by Watson’s long-time label Sugar Hill. Most of the cuts here date to 1962 & 1964 & were recorded shortly after Watson’s “discovery” by Eugene Earle & Ralph Rinzler. There are some Watson solos (not very different from the way he sounds today), plus cuts with Gaither Carlton on fiddle, other family recordings with Rosa Lee and his older brother Arnold. Similar to the Watson Family recordings on Smithsonian-Folkways, this is a lovely addition to the great Watson legacy. RYE COVE, FISHER’S HORNPIPE, MY WANDERING BOY, HONEY BABE, TINY BROKEN HEART, JUST A FRIEND, LONELY TOMBS, OLD DAVEY DUGGER, WHEN THE ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER. 16 cuts.
