This CD is available now - after being out of print for more than a year --

There's an
interesting story to this record, or should we say "CD". It was the first ever
compact disc put out by Rebel Records, and in those days (mid 1980s) a small
independent label had to go outside the USA to get compact discs made (there
were essentially no plants in the USA to manufacture CDs besides the major
labels, and they were having problems meeting their own requirements). The
tapes had to be sent to Holland for mastering (at many times today's cost) and
the masters were then sent to Japan for pressing, with a minimum quantity of
3,000 pressings required (at a cost 10 times the price of fabricating CDs today).
Added to the above costs was a huge bill for shipping and customs duty. When
the CDs finally arrived and the Seldom Scene got the first few boxes, John Duffey
quickly discovered that one of the songs had been left off the CD, and another one
duplicated --the master had to be redone and the entire 3000 copies re-pressed !
Despite that inauspicious beginning, the record became one of the 3 or 4
best selling Rebel albums ever. Originally designed as one of two "Best of"
collections, this CD drew from only the first three Scene LPs (Acts 1, 2 and 3).
But the demand for their other 4 Rebel LPs was so great that there never was
a "Best Of, Volume 2" --the other records were all soon re-issued in their LP
versions & jackets. But this compact disc remains in print as a super sampler,
and includes 16 classic songs such as RIDER, CITY OF NEW ORLEANS,
PARADISE, LITTLE GEORGIA ROSE, MUDDY WATER, etc. $ 13.99
