DOC WATSON 'Vanguard Years (4-CD set)'
Doc Watson has done a ton of recordings, and I can’t think of any that aren’t good, but some of my favorites of his are the 8 or 9 albums that he did for Vanguard early in his career. Three of the 4 discs here contain a good sampling of material from all his Vanguard LPs (including some tracks from anthologies and short-lived mixed artist records), and the 4th CD is devoted to 17 previously unissued recordings taken from various live shows (mostly Winfield, Kans., and Jordon Hall in Boston). There is a fine variety of material here—from unaccompanied old ballads to the smooth guitar duets that Doc recorded with his son Merle and a few pieces from Doc’s “Live In Nashville” LP. A total of 64 pieces—there is duplication with the 7 other currently available Vanguard Watson CDs, but there’s no doubt any real fan of Doc’s will want to have this fine set. RAMBLING HOBO, MUSKRAT, DOC’S GUITAR, LITTLE SADIE, WINDY & WARM, TENN. STUD, BANKS OF THE OHIO, RANK STRANGER, CORRINA, OTTO WOOD, COUNTRY BLUES, INTOXICATED RAT, SOUTHBOUND, I AM A PILGRIM, SPIKE DRIVER BLUES, WAY DOWNTOWN, CANNONBALL RAG, etc.
