MARK O'CONNOR 'Liberty!'
The amazingly accomplished O’Connor delves again into the classical field with this highly arranged and orchestrated disc that was the soundtrack for the 6-hour PBS special on the American revolution. The music here, which he calls "folk Baroque", will be too heavy and a bit too polite for most of our readers, but it’s obviously well done and will most likely have a real appeal for those with a classical bent and those curious to see the interaction O’Connor has with cellist Yo Yo Ma as well as James Taylor and Wynton Marsalis. Of more interest to some will be the old-time flavored cuts of SOLDIER’S JOY (with Mark Schatz on banjo and Jerry Douglas on dobro), DEVIL’S DREAM and FLOWERS OF EDINBURGH. FREEDOM, BUNKER HILL, SURRENDER THE SWORD, BRAVE WOLFE, SONG OF THE LIBERTY BELL.
