I hadn’t heard of any of the members of this 5-piece (dobro instead of fiddle) California band, but they have it together, with a very strong 12-song collection of dynamic, soulful bluegrass. The songs are very well chosen and the instrumental work is tasteful and right on the money, but the real feature of the album is the powerful singing, both the harmony work and especially the highly distinctive voice of Shirley Gerber. She doesn’t have a particularly pretty voice and strays a bit off key in a few spots, but she is a wonderfully forceful and effective singer who grows on you quickly. The band’s versions of BRAMBLE & THE ROSE, IN THE GRAVEL YARD and Charlie Moore’s KENTUCKY GIRL are strong enough to make you glad to hear their versions, and the title song and MY LIFE IS HID are eerily powerful, driving bluegrass at its best. But my favorite is Gerber’s own PRAY FOR THE CHILDREN, sung beautifully with intense but restrained emotion. On the strength of this record, I’d go out of my way to see this group. A few may find Gerber’s voice strident, but I’m sure a lot of our customers will really appreciate the feeling and punch in this band’s music. TAKE THIS HAMMER, TAKE UP YOUR CROSS, PASS ME NOT, CLINCH MT. BACKSTEP etc.
