RED SMILEY & THE BLUEGRASS CUTUPS

RED SMILEY & THE BLUEGRASS CUTUPS

The Rural Rhythm label—inactive for a number of years—has started to re-issue some of their best old LPs on the current CD format, and this one was a good choice. Cut in 1968 it features Smiley after he parted ways with Don Reno but was still in top form. The band, which was the fine group that backed him daily on the legendary TOP OF THE MORNING radio shows in Roanoke, Va, included Tater Tate, Billy Edwards, Herschel Sizemore and John Palmer. The fine selection of 20 well-recorded songs includes many numbers that Red (and Reno & Smiley) never recorded elsewhere. DIRTY DISHES, DYING SOLDIER, OLD GOSPEL SHIP, MY FARM IN LOUISIANA, OLD PAL OF YESTERDAY, GARDEN IN THE SKY, CONEY ISLE, DEAR OLD DIXIE, RED WING
