ARH-456 J.E. MAINER'S MOUNTAINEERS "Run Mountain" Taken from field recordings made by Chris Strachwitz in 1963, this is a re-issue of one of Arhoolie's first LPs, with the original 14 songs & tunes augmented by another 9 previously unreleased cuts. Featuring J.E.'s family (Glenn, Carolyn & J.E. Jr.) the perform-ances are not as strong as his earlier work for Bluebird in the 1930s or King in the 1940s, and in general not up to his later work for Rural Rhythm either. But it's pleasant, typical old-time music in the Mainer style and nicely presented with good notes. SHORT LIFE OF TROUBLE, SALLY GOODIN', MAPLE ON THE HILL, HOP ALONG PETER, RAMSHACKLE SHACK, COUNTRY BLUES, RHYTHM BLUES, OH THOSE TOMBS, 2 LITTLE ROSEBUDS etc
