RED MOUNTAIN WHITE TRASH 'Chickens Don't Roost Too High'
If from the name of this band you think this is a hot-shot group of urban kids who have just discovered old-time music, you better check this out. This is actually the second release from a mature & superior group of old-time aficionados from the Birmingham, AL area and this album is one of the finest of its type we've ever heard. They have a firm, stately ensemble sound that is creative yet works entirely within a traditional framework. In places, they are reminiscent of a couple of the fine early Arkansas string bands with a richly textured sound that includes two fiddles, harp, guitar, mandolin, autoharp and a very well played acoustic bass. Ed Baggott and Jim Cauthen provide lovely two fiddle work, including a fine fiddle only treatment of the tune MESSENGER. The group has chosen an absolutely superb program of tunes for this disc with wonderful performances of STEP AROUND JOHNNY, NATCHEZ UNDER THE HILL, BRUCE'S RETURN Freeny's classic DON'T YOU REMEMBER THE TIME, NEWBORN BLUES and a number of effective 2-tune medleys that include GIDEON/ECHOES OF THE OZARKS, FOOTSTEPS/SARAH ARMSTRONG'S TUNE, and a cleverly dong & appropiate DOUGHBOY RAG/LONESOME BLUES. There are several vocals among the 22 tracks with one Carole Griffin doing a pleasant job on DIXIE DARLING and ADIEU FALSE HEART. An album we have played at least a dozen times and that we can give our highest recommendation to for old-time fans. BROWN'S FERRY BLUES, ADELING WALTZ, LONESOME JOHN, FAREWELL TRIO, etc.
