HAND STITCHED 'Minnesota Mountain Music'
MBOTMA-9801 HAND STITCHED "Minnesota Mountain Music" There is an inherent danger in a project of this type that tries to give everyone a chance to be heard: true democracy in music usually results in true mediocrity, as is the case here. The album, which is attractively presented, tries to give a picture of the state of Bluegrass & Old-time music in Minnesota today: if accurate, it is not a very flattering picture. 16 of the 19 tracks here fall into categories that range from average to amateurish to downright poor. The only really strong cuts are a rousing, well-played BLACKBBERRY BLOSSOM that features Karen Mueller on autoharp, and a very pleasant & professional CAROLINA RAIN by Becky Schlegel & True Blue (see review of their nice album "This Lonesome Song" on page 7 of our last Newsletter, # 231). Another cut that is well done is an energetic Celtic styled BLACK VELVET BAND by Curtis Teague & Loretta Simonet. After that, unfortunately, it’s ho-hum or push the fast forward button. HOW HIGH THE MOON, SENECA SQUARE DANCE, READY, ORPHA’S WALTZ, NO BANJOS IN HEAVEN, LONESOME FEELING, IF YOU LOVE ME, IN SOUTHERN INDIANA, etc.
