This unexpected, well-annotated 2-CD set is a wonderful time capsule that really captures a unique time, place & sound in the history of country music. Taken from some rare radio transcriptions cut in Dallas between 1956 and 1959 (and very well re-mastered), it is a window into the transitional period when rockabilly music was displacing more traditional forms of country music. While these recordings (over 50 tracks) may well bring back some bad memories for those who were struggling to play or hear pure country music at the time, they nevertheless really capture the ex- citement that was felt then by many younger fans. The producers have done a smart thing by dividing the music into two distinctly different discs: the first devoted to "hillbillies" and the 2nd to "rockabillies". The first disc is enjoyable enough, with cuts by Johnny Cash, Wanda Jackson, Ferlin Huskey, Leon Payne, Charlene Arthur, Cowboy Copas, Mitchell Torok and even some rudimentary Bluegrass by a band called the Kentucky Mountain Boys. It's certainly a worthwhile record on its own. But there's no doubt that the Rockabilly CD is the star here, with 29 cuts of raw, dynamic, rocking live music by many of the masters of the genre. The 5 tracks by Carl Perkins (THAT'S ALL RIGHT, BLUE SUEDE SHOES, SLIPPIN' & SLIDIN', I GOT A WOMAN, EVERYBODY'S TRYIN' TO BE MY BABY) are alone worth getting the record for captured in its heydey in front of a crowd that was obviously really into it, it's hard to imagine any better examples than this. There are also 4 cuts by Gene Vincent, and tracks by Warren Smith, Sid King, Jerry Reed, Ronnie Dee and others-just about all of them power-charged examples of this short-lived sub-genre at the very peak of its existence. If you have any liking at all for rockabilly sounds, check this out!
