Apart from Doc Watson's recorded work with Tom Ashley, these are some of Doc's earliest recordings, taped at a couple of two-week stints in 1962 & 1963 at what was to become a pretty well known folk club in New York's Greenwich Village, Gerde's Folk City. These appearances eventually led to his singing with Vanguard Records, starting what was to become of the really outstanding careers in American music. The first thing that strikes the listener when hearing these 15 tracks is how much the same Watson has remained from that day to this, almost 40 years later. This is intended as a supreme compliment: Watson's proficiency, warmth, humility, and his unique way of connecting with an audience were already there in 1962 just as they are today. Peter Siegel--who as a yong man made this wonderful set which captures the intimacy of the small club & its live audience without anyinstrusion on the individual performances. Followers of Watson will most likely be familiar with all the songs he plays here, but don't let that stop you from having this disc, which is a wonderful early look a a great musician.
