Evans, who has played with groups like Cloud Valley and Dry Branch Fire Squad, and who cut a very nice banjo album for Rounder several years ago has another good disc here, with excellent help from a supporting cast that includes Rob Ickes on dobro, Missy Raines & Todd Phillips on bass, John Reischman on mandolin and three fiddlers (Glen Duncan, Greg Spatz and Darol Anger). Apart from a nicely done HEAVY TRAFFIC AHEAD featuring a vocal by Don Rigsby, this is an all-instrumental record, and has enough variety to appeal to most 5-string banjo fans: about half the tunes definitely lean to the progressive style, but Evans, as he demonstrated on his Rounder album, has a good respect and feel for the traditional as well, and those tunes are the highlights of this record for this listener. Apart from Rigsby’s vocal cut and a really nice version of BLACK EYED SUSIE, the tunes are all Evans’ originals, and several—like PETERSBURG GAL and GERMAINE’S DREAM are quite effective & make for good listening. A nice album. KOBE BLUES, LEAVING OWENSBORO, GRANITE CHIEF, RAISING THE BEAMS, WHEN SHE SMILES, LONESOME POLKA, etc.
