There are a couple of significant things about this album, apart from the fact that it is fine Appalachian string band music from the late 1930’s and 40’s. The 26 tracks here represent the total recorded output of this band, cut for the Bluebird label in 1940 and for Deluxe in 1946. Curiously, Byron Parker played no instrument- he was a radio announcer who put together this band which included Homer “Pappy” Sherrill on fiddle and Snuffy Jenkins on banjo. There are 4 fine fiddle pieces here (UP JUMPED THE DEVIL, C & NW RAILROAD BLUES, PEANUT SPECIAL and CARROLL COUNTY BLUES) but it is Jenkin’s banjo that is especially notable, because it is the first recorded example of the distinctive 3-finger roll that quickly became know as “Scruggs-Style” banjo. It is heard best here in the background of TELL HER NOT TO WAIT FOR ME and THAT’S WHY I’M BLUE in the 1940 session. (By the 1946 Deluxe session, Jenkins was playing a full-blown “Scruggs-Style”) Another significant curiosity is what is likely the first recorded use of the difficult and distinctive off-beat echoing vocals later employed so wonderfully by RENO & SMILEY in such songs as THE LORD’S LAST SUPPER. It appears here on the song “I LOVE MY SAVIOUR”. A fine & important collection. BEAUTIFUL LIFE, GETHSEMANE, WE SHALL RISE, etc.
