After splitting up with Red Smiley, Don Reno made a number of albums for several labels including CMH, mostly teamed with Bill Harrell. While most of these records included some less than impressive cuts, they did put down some fine music, and compiler Ben Elder has done a generally excellent job in picking out 25 representative songs and tunes that include some of their best work together. There are solid versions of Reno & Smiley classics like TALK OF THE TOWN, THE LORD’S LAST SUPPER, LONG GONE, HE’S COMING BACK TO EARTH, USING MY BIBLE FOR A ROAD MAP and I KNOW YOU’RE MARRIED plus some of Reno’s most distinctive instrumentals, DIXIE BREAKDOWN, CHARLOTTE BREAKDOWN, LIMEHOUSE BLUES, FOLLOW THE LEADER and RENO RIDE. There’s also a great cut of Reno playing guitar – COUNTRY BOY ROCK & ROLL – that’s not far behind the classic original on KING. Unfortunately, the 10-post Harrell cuts are mostly ruined by heavy percussion – that includes what might have been good cuts of SKYLINE DRIVE and BYE BYE BLUES, and a poor cut of a great Reno tune BANJO SIGNAL. Fortunately, most of the poorest tracks are toward the end of the disc. FIVE FOOT TWO, etc.
