Fairchild, an excellent musician often billed as “King of the Smoky Mountain Banjo Pickers” has produced a substantial number of banjo albums over the years, and the various re-issues can get confusing. This one combines 13 tunes taken from two old LP’s that Fairchild recorded for Marc Pruett’s Skyline label in 1985 and 1987. It’s good stuff, well recorded and featuring fiddler Arvil Freeman and the Crowe Brothers as backup artists. Fairchild shows his indebtedness to the masters, Scruggs, Reno and Stanley, as well as inserting some of his own trademark riffs. Tunes include FOGGY MOUNTAIN SPECIAL, DEAR OLD DIXIE, CLINCH MT. BACKSTEP, KATY HILL, SHUCKIN’ THE CORN, T FOR TEXAS, FLINT HILL SPECIAL and FOGGY MT. BREAKDOWN.
