A relatively new British label that has started to get into re-issues in a big way is responsible for this old-time collection of 19 tracks by an unusual group that put out some very interesting music. Unusual in that the family group was based in California (though tracing its roots back to West Va. and Kentucky), the Crocketts’ repertoire included top-notch old-time instrumentals as well as some hoky, pedestrian “city billy” vocals. The classics here include the great LITTLE RABBIT as well as several wonderful medleys featuring fiddle, banjo and other instruments. Then there is the fine & fascinating guitar piece, FRESNO BLUES, and Dad Crocketts superb banjo solo, SUGAR HILL. It appears that most, if not all, of the band’s Brunswick & Crown recordings are here. Song documentation is random and inconsistent, and the sound quality varies (it is much better, though, than similar collections on the Document label). All in all a worthwhile and enjoyable album. CRIPPLE CREEK, AFTER THE BALL, CONVICTS LAMENT, SKIP TO MY LOU, HARD CIDER SONG, ROSALEE, etc.
