VARIOUS ARTISTS 'The Banjo Special'
Arnie Naiman & Chris Coole are two Canadian clawhammer banjo pickers who had two very nice previous releases that we carry ( M-01-CD and M-02-CD "Two Banjos, 5 Strings Attached --Vol 1 & 2", $ 13.99 ea.). On this new 17-track collection they add the services of an Irish tenor banjoist, plus Chris Quinn who performs on 5 pieces in Bluegrass style. I am not crazy about the tenor banjo pieces (4 of the tunes), but the clawhammer work is fine, as are the Bluegrass-clawhammer combinations. Naiman & Coole get lovely tone from their instruments and carefully note all the different tunings they use. Well-recorded, this is a most enjoyable disc for anyone who likes old-time clawhammer sounds. YEAR OF JUBILO, SUNRISE, ROSE IN THE MOUNTAIN, LITTLE BIRDIE, OLD DANGERFIELD, COLD TEA, etc.
