GREENBRIAR BOYS 'Big Apple Bluegrass'

GREENBRIAR BOYS 'Big Apple Bluegrass'

  • $13.50

Surrounded by a large number of beatniks and folkies, the Greenbriar Boys were the first real Bluegrass band to emerge from the Washington Square scene at the start of the hootenanny craze. In the 6 or 7 years of their existence, they were a popular group in New York and the Northeast, helping to establish a beachhead for Bluegrass there. They had the right spirit and picked out good material, though by today’s standards the singing was ragged and pretty weak. On the other hand, Bob Yellin was a good solid Scruggs-style banjo picker, and the band increased its quality and impact by utilizing authentic rural musicians like Frank Wakefield, Jim Buchanan, Buddy Pendleton, and Jack Cooke at various times. This new 17-song re-issue is taken from all three of their Vanguard studio albums and includes 7 previously unissued tracks. All but one of the cuts are new to CD, and do not duplicate their “Best Of the Vanguard Years” CD (VAN-206/207, $ 13.50.)
