One of the highlights of the folk revival of the late 1950s and early 60s was John Cohen's discovery of Kentuckian Roscoe Holcomb. His raw, high-pitched nasal vocals are unmistakable, and his old-time banjo picking and bluesy guitar work are equally distinctive and fascinating, as is his mixed repertoire. This album is a fine companion to his previous Smithsonian CD (SFW-40104), and together the two albums contain most of the tracks from his Folkways LPs, plus some additional cuts not previously issued. This is the real thing- not for the faint of heart.
