'Honky Tonk: Portraits of Country Music' by Henry Horenstein BOOK: HONKY TONK-BOOK
HONKY-TONK by Henry Horenstein (Chronicle Books, 2003) 144 pages. Sub-titled “Portraits of Country Music 1972-1981” this is an attractive, nicely done book of photos taken in the 1970s by Horenstein, a Boston-based photographer who did a number of shots for the fledgling Rounder label in its early days, including the well-known portrait of Don Stover that graced his “Things In Life”: album. The book is in a square, 10” x 10” format, with brief but informative captions. Despite the book’s title and sub-title, the work does not just feature Nashville artists, though there are many fine shots of people like Hank Snow, Tex Ritter, George Jones, Porter Wagoner, Dolly Parton, etc. But there’s also plenty for the Bluegrass and old-time fan, with neat pictures of Del McCoury, Doc Watson, The Lilly Brothers, the Blue Sky Boys, Bill & Charlie Monroe, Roscoe Holcomb, Grandpa Jones, Stringbean, John Duffey, Joe Val, DeFord Bailey, Mac Wiseman, Maybelle Carter and many more. An excellent photo book that we recommend highly.
