The significant artistic & commercial success of “Down The Old Plank Road” led to the issue of this second album devoted to the same theme—showing the striking inter-relationship of the musics of Ireland and Appalachia. It’s another very entertaining & worthwhile project even if it doesn’t have quite as interesting a cast or as many musical high points as the first volume. There are in fact three tracks here that appeared on the Plank Road DVD but were not on the equivalent CD: cuts by Tim O’Brien, John Hiatt and Emmylou Harris—all of these are quite nice. Other good cuts include those by Joe Ely (MOONSHINER), Patty Loveless (3 LITTLE BABES), Ricky Skaggs (TALK ABOUT SUFFERING), John Prine (GIRL I LEFT BEHIND) and Doc Watson’s great medley of FISHERS HORNPIPE & DEVIL’S DREAM. Even Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s SQUID JIGGIN GROUND is pleasant enough, though this tame version pales in comparison with Hank Snow’s gritty classic recording. All in all it’s a very nice project, tastefully overseen by the Chieftains’ Paddy Maloney. SHADY GROVE, WILD MOUNTAIN THYME, LAMBS IN THE GREENFIELD, etc.
