This is a highly charged string band from Kansas City, Mo. that has been getting a fair bit of attention in various venues including the popular MerleFest in North Carolina. It is a band that comes across a lot better on stage than on record: the 4 musicians work in very close proximity around one microphone, and everything they do has an intense (if often ragged) quality that demands attention. The group is not particularly adept at singing, so the main feature of their act is the highly rhythmic and intensely energetic fiddling of Betse Ellis: on this 14-track CD the fiddle tunes are MOLLY PUT THE KETTLE ON, SWAMP CAT RAG, BLACK EYED SUSIE, RYE STRAW, and DIXIE BLOSSOM. The songs are typical old-time and country/western fare like HALF AS MUCH, WHITE HOUSE BLUES, T FOR TEXAS and LOW & LONELY. These vary in quality from pretty rough to somewhat engaging, with guitars, dobro and some raggy mandolin providing backing with varying degrees of success. The group obviously is really into what they are doing, and the enthusiasm carries over to their audiences.
