There’s no doubt that this band is one of the most professional and personable on today’s Bluegrass circuit, and they have gained a legion of dedicated fans. Their singing is superb, their picking top-notch (Adam Steffey is one of the very best of today’s mandolinists), and their arrangements worked out to a “T”. Perhaps that is the problem I have with their sound, and at the risk of some serious criticism I have to say that their music leaves me wondering what I am missing here. After 5 or 6 plays I cannot get by the ultra-slick, highly refined sounds that strike me as almost the opposite of hard-edged, soulful, “real” Bluegrass (as in Flatt & Scruggs, Jimmy Martin, Monroe and many of today’s top bands such as Blue Highway, IIIrd Tyme Out and Lonesome River Band). It’s a new brand of Bluegrass that obviously has much appeal to many, but if you like a bit of “edge” to your music, this may not be your cup of tea. MAN IN THE MIRROR, LIFE SHE’S CHOSEN, ANOTHER DAY, BORN ON THE WIND, TWISTER, THE OLD HOME TOWN, etc.
