This tribute to a wonderful lady is well-intentioned, but unfortunately those involved are not really equal to the task. Granted that it is nigh impossible to capture the essence of Ms. Reed, who was an amazing person, a fine songwriter and a powerful singer. Though in her later years she was idolized by more of a folk-type audience for her determination and individualism, most of those followers glossed over the fact that through most of her life she was associated not with “folk”, but with country and Bluegrass music: some of her best work was recorded with her brother Alex for Starday and their own New River label, with a group that included Ted Lundy on banjo, Sonny Miller on fiddle and Deacon Brumfield on dobro, (a later Rounder LP also contains some fine tracks). Her songs HIGH ON A MOUNTAIN and SPRINGTIME OF LIFE are classics—they get passable readings here, but something is just not right. Hopefully this project will lead to a deserved re-issue of Ola Belle that will show her many fascinating sides. UNDONE IN SORROW, I’VE ENDURED, MY EPITAPH, etc.
