RANDY WALLER 'Randy Waller'

This was the first Bluegrass album for Waller, son of one of the greatest of all Bluegrass singers, Charlie Waller. The record is a bit uneven in two ways: Randy’s vocals range from right on to some on which he seems to be trying too hard to be distinctive; second, the songs don’t all work. Actually some of the best material on the disc is Waller’s own, including nice ones called THE VISION and LITTLE RED SHOES and a well written and nicely sung DADDY’S OLD GUITAR. Other winners are a bluesy Bonnie Raitt song (GIVE IT UP OR LET ME GO), The O’Kane’s DADDYS NEED TO GROW UP TOO and the hymn OLD RUGGED CROSS. Waller is very nicely backed by Sammy Shelor (banjo), Aubrey Haynie (fiddle) and Jimmy Gaudreau (mandolin). Randy, who played country music for many years, seems quite comfortable in a Bluegrass setting, and his voice is—not surprisingly—highly reminiscent of his dad’s at times.
