CLAYTON McMICHEN 'The Legendary Fiddler'

Truly one of the great country fiddlers of all-time, McMichen in his later years was evidently bitter that he was remembered more for his early hoedown fiddling with the Skillet Lickers than his more “sophisticated” later work with Slim Bryant and his own Georgia Wildcats. But listening to some of his 1930’s Decca recordings (like DON’T SELL MY PAPPY NO MORE RUM) it’s pretty easy to see why his pop & jazz efforts were not taken that seriously, even if they sold fairly well for the time. Fellow Georgian Lowe Stokes more than once related the story about a Skillet Licker recording session in New York in which A & R man Frank Walker rebuffed McMichen’s attempts to play jazz & pop ditties, claiming that he could “open the window and whistle and get a dozen bands” that could do tin pan alley music, whereas nobody could play the authentic old-time tunes better than Tanner, McMichen, Stokes and Puckett. This 24-track CD is worthwhile in that it provides a good sampling of both sides of McMichen’s work. There are a couple of great fiddle-guitar cuts with Riley Puckett, a few all out rags and breakdowns with the early, more down-home Georgia Wildcats from both Columbia and Crown sessions in the early 30s. And there are only 4 of the less interesting later 1930s Deccas. But amidst the mediocrity, Decca did manage to get McMichen to record 3 78s of straight-ahead fiddle tune medleys of such tunes as SOLDIERS JOY, FIRE IN THE MOUNTAIN, HEN CACKLE, RICKETT’S HORNPIPE, SUGAR IN THE GOURD, etc., and happily 5 of the 6 sides are on this disc. In short, there’s more than enough good fiddling to make this a worthwhile purchase.
