VARIOUS 'Can't You Hear Me Callin': 80 Years of Bluegrass'

  • $45.00

(4-CD set) Whoa…. Just when we were ready to heap big praises on COLUMBIA/LEGACY for this huge and impressive collection, we caught sight of some arrogant, false hype in the packaging: so we certainly have to qualify our words. But before we get to that, let’s spread out the positives here, which are many. There are over 100 tracks here, of mostly good to great music, with a well done booklet of notes by Billy Altman and plenty of good photos. And there are a couple of other noteworthy aspects that are definitely worth citing. First, the set includes about 14 tracks of early, pre-Bluegrass music, from such artists as Gid Tanner, Charlie Poole, The Carter Family, the Monroe Brothers and Roy Acuff. Second, this is one of the first such collections issued by a major label (SONY) that has gone and leased appropriate material from the other major labels (in this case Capitol (Louvin Brothers, Jim & Jesse), MGM (Osborne Bros.) and MCA/UNIVERSAL (Jimmy Martin, Mac Wiseman)). And they’ve even borrowed a few tracks from Rounder. Since this is a Columbia project, there’s no shortage of Monroe (9 tracks), Flatt & Scruggs (9), The Stanley Bros. (6), Carl Story (5), and Jim & Jesse (9). There are also unexpected, but welcome selections by Jack Youngblood, The Webster Brothers, Bill & Mary Reid, Roy Hall, and the Bailes Brothers, among others. Now to the problem. In the short but very prominent blurb on the back of this box is the sentence: “All of the major figures of Bluegrass…. are here.” To put it bluntly, this is a blatant, red-faced lie. Where are the Country Gentlemen? The Seldom Scene? Doyle Lawson? Reno & Smiley? In their place we find The O’Kanes, Edgar Meyer, Steve Earle, the Dixie Chicks, and 4 cuts by the Byrds. Columbia (SONY) is one of the leading companies in the music industry: to mis-represent this package is inexcusable, and a real black mark against them, and shows complete disrespect for some of the key figures in the history of Bluegrass music. With that said, we’ll still advise you to invest in this box, which is a great collection despite the limitations.
