The Arkansas-born Armstrong Twins—Floyd & Lloyd—were one of several Southwestern groups who moved to California in the 1940s and went on to record for the 4-Star label. Playing mandolin & guitar the brother duet put down some interesting recordings, with a raw, rough style that was quite different than the smooth, close harmonies of the Blue Sky Boys, Delmore Bros. and Louvin Brothers. But there’s definitely a soul and charm to their renditions of MOTHER’S ONLY SLEEPING, SPARKING BLUE EYES, WHY NOT CONFESS, ADDRESS FROM HEAVEN and IT’S NEVER TOO LATE. And their raggy mandolin tunes are fun. Ten of the cuts here are from their early 4-Star records, with the remaining 7 taken off a 1979 Arhoolie LP by the duo. A good disc. MANDOLIN RAG, ARKANSAS SPECIAL, OLD THREE ROOM SHACK, ALABAMA BABY, 3 MILES SOUTH OF CASH, etc.
