This new Bear Family disc is a re-issue combining two Dot label LPs that quickly became scarce collector's items. Since the 2nd of these albums was a rather mediocre Don Reno issue from 1964, one might not pay much attention to this CD. However, the 12 cuts that Reno and Smiley made for Dot in 1957, under the direction of Mac Wiseman were excellent recordings that hold up well with most of their King work. With Wiseman and the great fiddler Benny Martin helping out, Reno & Smiley put down such classics as YOUR LOVE IS DYING, SAWING ON THE STRINGS, SWEETHEARTS IN HEAVEN and the poignant WHERE DID OUR YOUNG YEARS GO. Wonderful stuff, and to go with it a great set of notes by Eddie Stubbs in a 48-page booklet that also features a discography and some fine photos. Classic Bluegrass-Recommended.
