RED SMILEY 'Sings Country'

The 10 tracks here—originally recorded in 1968 for the Major label of Waynesboro, VA—have languished virtually unknown in that company’s vaults since then. Their discovery and release now are in one sense an important event. There was no question that Red Smiley had a wonderful voice that was as well suited to country music as it was to Bluegrass. His singing here is strong, but the songs are weak and the production is plodding and lackluster. BEST FEMALE ACTRESS OF THE YEAR is the only song here that’s in any way noteworthy, and to be honest, Charlie Moore’s later version of the song is better. A disappointment, and not a good testament to the state of country music at the time. STOP ME, OLD HAS BEEN, FALSE IMPRESSIONS, MY WORLD, WAILING WALL, etc.
