Some of the most intriguing and enjoyable LP recordings of old-time music were two wonderful albums on the Folkways label called "Old Time Music At Clarence Ashley's" produced in 1961 & 1963 by Ralph Rinzler. Not only did these "re-discover" a great personality and entertainer in Tom Ashley, but they introduced the world to Doc Watson, who some 30 years and 30+ albums later has attained legendary status as one of the great rural artists of all time. This lovely 2-CD set presents 48 recordings made by Rinzler at these early sessions. Fans will be thrilled to learn that there are 20 previosly unissued cuts here, although curiosly some 7 or 8 pieces from the original LPs have been left out, including one of my favorites, the ballad CLAUDE ALLEN (Don't sell those old Folkways LPs). There's quite a variety here, including solos, duets and band numbers, and many of those feature the fine work of Fred Price, Clint Howard, Gaither Carlton and "New River Jack" Burchett. In short, a lot of great old time music to sink your teeth into, and it's beautifully presented with a lovely 32 page booklet of excellent notes and photos. A must for old-time fans! COO COO BIRD, TOUGH LUCK, FREE LITTLE BIRD, CLUCK OLD HEN, DANIEL PRAYED, WILLIE MOORE, RISING SUN BLUES, HONEY BABE, CHILLY WINDS, HICK'S FAREWELL, SHOUT LOU, LITTLE SADIE, WALKING BOSS, OLD RUBEN etc.
