Valerie Smith has got to be one of the most under-rated singers and performers on the scene today. That is probably because she cannot easily be plugged into one genre. She’s not really a Bluegrass singer, yet her sound is too grassy for Americana, too real for modern country, and maybe too “country” for pure Bluegrass. But if you want to hear a great artist and a gem of an album, throw out the classifications and listen to this disc. On this, her 4th record to date, Valerie again confirms that she is a master at selecting good (and varied) material and is able to present it with spirit and a huge dose of personality. The disc should please most Bluegrass lovers as the backing is essentially excellent Bluegrass, with Becky Buller on fiddle, John Wesley Lee on mandolin and a lot of great dobro work by Andy Hall. Most of the songs are of recent vintage and they’re all good: with the help of Becky Buller’s clawhammer banjo, Smith uses the old tune ROCKY ISLAND and Buller’s IN THOSE MINES to set off the more contemporary pieces like Lisa Aschman’s PLANET OR A STAR and the same writer’s beautiful PEACE OF THE RIVER. John Lowell’s SARAH HOGAN works perfectly for Ms. Smith, as does Brad Davis’ FALLING. But the best cuts of all may be Sarah Major’s lovely HEALING HILLS and Megan McCormick’s wonderful FILL MY EVERY NEED. A superb album in every way, highly recommended.
