RED CLAY RAMBLERS 'Rambler'

RED CLAY RAMBLERS 'Rambler'

One of the later albums by this eclectic and popular old-time group from the Durham, N.C. area, this record compares favorably with most of their best Flying Fish albums of earlier days. Tommy Thompson (banjo), Clay Buckner (fiddle) and Jack Herrick, the familiar names here, are joined by Chris Frank and Bland Simpson (piano) in this version of the band which tackles a typically esoteric mixture of material. The 15 cuts contain more pieces from the old-time tradition than their previous 3 or 4 albums did, and we think this makes for a more successful project, because they handle this material better than most of the “cutesy” pop type tunes that they have been known to toy with (and which seem to go over much better in a live show than on a record). A solid and enjoyable disc.
