JOHN LOWELL & BEN WINSHIP 'Occupational Hazards'

This duo, from the state of Idaho, has produced some good CDs in the past, and some excellent songs that have been recorded by other leading artists (Valerie Smith does a great job on John Lowell's fine song SARAH HOGAN on her latest CD—see review). While they can’t be categorized as old-time, country or Bluegrass, they show influences from all of those genres as they present tasteful, relaxed performances of a nice mixture of old songs and their new originals. They use primarily mandolin & guitar or two guitars on particularly nice versions of PEG & AWL, RUDE & RAMBLING BLADE, EAST VIRGINIA BLUES, HOBO’S LULLABY and the Delmores’ WEARY DAY. Their own LAST HILL BEFORE HOME, OLD BLACK COAT and ROAD AGENT’S LAMENT are pleasant additions to a solid and enjoyable disc.
