BRYANT HOUSTON 'Stradivarius Made It-Bryant Houston Played It'

Though we had not heard his name previously, Mr Houston was evidently one of the early practitioners of the so-called “Texas Contest Style”. The jacket states that he won over 278 fiddle contests and was inducted into the Texas Fiddlers Hall Of Fame in 1986. There is little in the way of notes or documentation to accompany this disc, but from the photos it would seem that Houston achieved his successes in the 1920s or 1930s. From the musical evidence here (most of which is understandably from scratchy home recordings), Houston had considerable talent which shows though the noise on tunes like GREY EAGLE, SHUKIN’ THE BUSH, JESSE POLKA, BEAUMONT RAG, LIMEROCK and MOCKINGBIRD (evidently his specialty). It’s too bad he wasn’t recorded in his prime in better circumstances. Buyer beware: we carry an earlier CD of Houston which seems to include about 2/3 of the same tunes as on this issue. An interesting item for Texas fiddle fans.
