This talented family band hit it big this past year, winning the prestigious IBMA “Entertainer of The Year” award—a feat previously unheard of for a young new band. They well deserve the acclaim, as their stage show and presentation will grab anyone’s attention. But beyond the flash & charm of their stage show there is real musical talent and achievement, and it comes through well on this new record, which is their first for Ricky Skaggs’ label (after three discs on their own). The star of the show may be Cia Leigh Cherryholmes, who is a darn good banjo player in the straight ahead traditional style and a superb singer who shows a very heavy Rhonda Vincent influence (BRAND NEW HEARTACHE sounds so much like Rhonda that it’s scary!). But the remaining band members (mother Sandy Lee, dad Jere, sons B.J. and Skip and youngest daughter Molly) all contribute powerfully to this album that has been well produced by Ben Isaacs. There is plenty of fine twin fiddling (B.J. and Molly Kate) that really pushes the band and gives a dynamic edge to the uptempo material (they do a fine job on Bill Monroe’s classic TALLAHASSEE). The group ends up with a fine a cappella Louvin Brothers song (NO ONE TO SING FOR ME) in which all 6 band members join in one at a time. A strong release by a family that truly has its act together.
