CLARKE BUEHLING & THE SKIRTLIFTERS 'A Ragtime Episode'

Here is something quite different that is really outside the scope of rural old-time music, yet it may well be of interest to more than a handful of old-time and banjo fans. It is a very nicely put-together collection of 18 rags played on the banjo (finger style) by Clark Buehling, with fiddle & guitar accompaniment. Those who have enjoyed the few solo banjo pieces that Charlie Poole recorded will likely enjoy the music here, which harks back to the playing of Fred Van Eps in the early days of the 20th century. The tunes were all composed in the late 1890s and early 1900s by such writers as Scott Joplin, Tom Turpin and Percy Jacques, and include highly syncopated classics like THE ENTERTAINER, MAPLE LEAF RAG, CAROLINA TAR HEEL, GEORGIA GRIND, CREOLE BELLES, PALLADIUM RAG, TICKLE TOES and HOT CORN. There’s a lot to many of these tunes, and Buehling and his cohorts capture the flavor of another age very nicely—the fiddle & guitar backing adds a lot without intruding on the banjo work. DARKTOWN DANDIES, RAGTIME DANCE etc.
