VERNON DALHART "Best Of The Best"
Dalhart, the man who in 1924 recorded WRECK OF THE OLD '97 and PRISONER'S SONG --probably the largest selling single record in the first 50 years of the recording "industry" --has not been very well represented on CD (or on LP, for that matter). There's no doubt that his voice does little for today's listener: too stiff and trained for the country listener, and too "corny" for a pop market. But Dalhart was a phenomenon and a source of material for many rural musicians of the 1920s, and this abbreviated 10-song CD presents his two biggest hits plus DEATH OF FLOYD COLLINS (another big-selling tear-jerker), CASEY JONES, WRECK OF THE SHENANDOAH, GOVERNOR'S PARDON, and MY BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN HOME, etc.
