LESTER FLATT 'The One & Only'

LESTER FLATT 'The One & Only'

After the breakup of Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs in the late 1960s, and Flatt’s departure from the Columbia label, Lester recorded one album with his new group for the Nashville-based Nugget label. The LP was evidently bought by Starday and came out as a budget item on that company’s Power Pak label. This particular budget issue is a hodge-podge made up of 8 tracks from the Nugget release plus a couple of old Flatt & Scruggs Mercury tracks, ROLL IN MY SWEET BABY’S ARMS and WE’LL MEET AGAIN SWEETHEART (the brief notes make no mention of the fact that these are not technically Lester Flatt performances). Flatt's band here included Josh Graves on dobro, Vic Jordan on banjo, Paul Warren on fiddle, Jake Tullock on bass and Roland White on mandolin. The music here is respectable, with Flatt returning to the more traditional sound that he & Scruggs had gotten away from in their last few efforts with Columbia. SUNNY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN, FLATLAND TWO-STEP, I’D LIKE TO HAVE PAPA SHOW BME AROUND, DRINK THAT MASH & TALK THAT TRASH, etc.
