VERN & RAY 'San Francisco-1968'

Vern Williams and Ray Park were hard-core traditional Bluegrass musicians from the Ozarks who became a very popular Bluegrass band in California in the 1960s and early 70s; they recorded little in their prime except for a few fine cuts for the Starday label and a wonderful LP for the Old Homestead label (Sounds From The Ozarks)—unfortunately long out of print. So it’s nice to see this issue taken from a show in San Francisco in 1968 in which they were joined on banjo by Herb Pedersen and a bass player. Ray Park plays guitar and some fiddle (ORANGE BLOSSOM SPECIAL, LEATHER BRITCHES) and Vern is featured on the mandolin and very high, distinctive tenor. With average sound for a live recording, this is an enjoyable 17-track program that includes songs like ON MY MIND, MULESKINNER BLUES, HARD TIMES, LITTLE GEORGIA ROSE, THE BOTTLE LET ME DOWN and THE TOUCH OF GOD’S HAND.
