WILMA LEE AND STONEY COOPER 'On The Banks Of The River'

WILMA LEE AND STONEY COOPER 'On The Banks Of The River'

Here’s a welcome addition that fills a big gap in the classic country & western music library. Originally regional stars in their native West Virginia in the 1940s, Wilma Lee & Stoney were favorites of Radio station WWVA’s JAMBOREE in the 1940s & 50s, later joining WSM’s Grand Ole Opry in 1957. Led by Wilma Lee’s wonderful, powerful voice, the group presented a colorful & highly entertaining show that fell in somewhere between Bluegrass and down-home country. Although they did not use banjo until late in their career, they did feature dobro and mandolin in addition to Stoney’s fiddling (Tex Logan did some fine fiddle work on some of their records, too). This 22-song album includes most of the best of their Columbia recordings like YOU TRIED TO RUIN MY NAME, SUNNY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN, CAN YOU FORGIVE, I CRIED AGAIN, ALL ON ACCOUNT OF YOU, 30 PIECES OF SILVER, NO ONE NOW and WALKING MY LORD UP CALGARY’S HILL. There are also about 6 tracks from their early Hickory label work, of which EACH SEASON CHANGES YOU and I’VE BEEN CHEATED TOO are winners.
