Singer Hylo Brown never really made it “big”, but had a somewhat successful musical career, recording for Capitol Records and later Starday, and fronting a solid Bluegrass band that was sponsored by Martha White—he was also a featured guest on Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs’ appearances for a stretch of time. He cut both Bluegrass and country/western music, but it is only the former that we’ll concern ourselves with here, specially the recordings he made for Uncle Jim O’Neal’s Rural Rhythm label in 1967-1968. He made 7 long playing albums then, most of them 20-song collections of mostly traditional material that the label could sell at bargain price (due to the lack of need for any composer royalties). This record draws from all 7 LPs, and the 25 songs include six performances never previously issued, including SUNNY TENNESSEE, I’LL BE ALL SMILES TONIGHT, and WILD BILL JONES. Comparing Brown’s singing here to his best Capitol days, we can use the songs LOST TO A STRANGER, FOOLISH PRIDE and PREISONER’S SONG as a focal point: while the production values are not up to Ken Nelson’s Capitol sounds, and Hylo may have lost a little edge to his voice, Brown still sounds very good on these tracks, and the backing is pretty solid Bluegrass provided by musicians of the time such as Danny Milhon (dobro), Jack Casey (lead guitar), Sid Campbell, Gerald Evans and Tater Tate. After a stroke in 1990, Brown’s career was pretty much over, and he died in 2003 in his native Kentucky. He did leave some fine music, and this is a good sampling here, with good songs well sung.
