Alabaman Davis continues an outstanding career in Bluegrass music with this, his second album for Rebel. It's hard-edged traditional fare, featuring Davis' authoritative vocals and his bluesy, Monroe influenced mandolin work, backed up perfectly by a tight band that includes good fiddling by Owen Saunders and the excellent harmony vocals of Marty Hays. The theme of most of the well-chosen songs here is songs with a story, such as Damon Black's fine JAKE SATTERFIELD, CHANCELLORSVILLE (a Civil War tale), and 3 good songs by Alan Johnston, BALLAD OF SARAH MALONE, THE RIVER RAN BLACK and MUDDY WATER. A surprise is a great version of the neat old Charlie Poole song, MILWAUKEE BLUES. And Davis' instrumental EVENING PRAYER BLUES is right on the money. Lots to recommend this superb recording by a great artist!
