Crowe—a Bluegrass Hall of Honor member—has been under recorded in the 50 years or so that he has been making music: this is only his 6th album since he made the classic NEW SOUTH recording with Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs in the Rounder label’s early days. This solid new effort features the lead singing of Ricky Wasson, joined by Dwight McCall’s tenor and Crowe’s fine baritone, creating a fine, tight trio. Ronnie Stewart adds a fine fiddle backing, and the 12 cuts are a pleasant collection of mostly new songs with a few good old ones added to the mix (BLUE BONNET LANE, ROVING GAMBLER, YOU CAN BE A MILLIONAIRE WITH ME and Larry Sparks’ JUST LOVING YOU (whoever transcribed the words to this one needs to go back for another listen). A steel guitar is added to a couple of cuts including the title song: these are two of the less successful tracks on the CD, (not necessarily because of the steel). All in all a very solid and enjoyable album from one of the legends/heroes of Bluegrass. I’M A HOBO and IN MY NEXT LIFE are nice cuts.
