Most Bluegrass guitarists will at least have heard of Wayne Henderson, who is a semi-legendary guitar builder from the back mountain country of southwestern Virginia. A student of the late E.C. Ball, he learned how to get an unusually fine tone out of a good guitar, and the relatively few instruments he can build are treasured by their owners, who include rock artist Eric Clapton (there is actually a book out by Allen St John, titled “Clapton’s Guitar—Watching Wayne Henderson build the perfect instrument”). Wayne not only builds and repairs guitars—he can play the fire out of them too. He is especially adept on old fiddle tunes, and that’s what fills most of this 21-track disc. At times he gets a bit carried away, with some random, superfluous noting, but for the most part it’s fine, thrilling guitar picking by a great musician. Tunes include SALLY ANNE, LITTLE MOSES, SALTY, JOHN HARDY, WHEELS, BLACK MT. RAG, TEMPERENCE REEL, etc.
