Here’s a totally unexpected reissue of a very rare Bluegrass record that came out on vinyl (LP) in 1985—a time when the record industry was converting from LP to the new CD format. The LP was out and gone in a matter of months—before County Sales even knew of its existence. It is a 14-song collection by one of many groups that featured Chris Hillman: here the vocalist & mandolin picker is joined by Bernie Leadon (banjo), Al Perkins (dobro & lead guitar), Jerry Scheff (bass) and David Mansfield (fiddle, guitar & mandolin). It’s solid, unpretentious Bluegrass gospel with lots of good songs—4 of them are bonus tracks that never appeared on the original LP. The vocals are a bit uneven, but most are strong and the group’s versions of RIVER OF JORDAN, ON THE SEA OF LIFE, LIVING IN THE NAME OF LOVE, MEN ARE SO BUSY, BOAT OF LOVE and I’M USING MY BIBLE FOR A ROADMAP are really nice. (We don’t know who the joker was who included PANHANDLE RAG on a gospel album, but it’s not a bad cut either).
