Cooke has been Ralph Stanley's bass player for about a generation now, and has always been good for a song or two per show with Stanley, and as a member of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys before that. He does a nice job here on 15 well-chosen songs on this recording produced by Jim Lauderdale. Included are several songs that Jack has been associated with over the years, including LET ME REST, & I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A RAMBLER (from an old 1963 single), WALKING THE DOG and the title song. Other songs include LONG BLACK VEIL, SUGAR COATED LOVE, NORTH TO ALASKA, ON & ON and THAT'S HOW THE COOKIE CRUMBLES. Providing a really solid backing for Cooke is a powerful assortment of musicians that includes Ralph Stanley, Del, Rob, and Ronnie McCoury, Mike Bub, James Shelton, and Jason Carter, among others. A nice disc from a fine journeyman performer.
