Tony Trischka has been a respected and influential banjo picker since the late 1960s, counting Bela Fleck as one of his many disciples. Known more as a jazz musician and one who continues to experiment with the banjo’s possibilities, most of his work has hovered around the fringes of Bluegrass, but as most know he can pick straight Scruggs style with the best of them when he wants to. This new CD has got to be his best yet—it is a very impressive record. It is obvious that a lot of thought, care and hard work went into this project, which finds Trischka in a double banjo setting with some of his favorite musicians. It is certainly appropriate that the album’s first track features the daddy of all Blue-grass banjo pickers, the man himself Earl Scruggs—Earl & Tony share licks on a very nice FAREWELL BLUES in a cut that also features Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Jerry Douglas (dobro), Mike Compton (mandolin) and David Grier (guitar). From that first tune you get the idea that this is going to be a special record, and we could comment extensively on just about all of the 14 tracks, but let’s just mention some of the highlights, pointing out the guest banjoists: Kenny Ingram (BON AQUA BLUES), Alison Brown (a pretty ESCHER’S WALTZ), Bill Emerson (OLD CANE POLE), and Steve Martin (!), whose original THE CROW—with Tony Ellis influences is perhaps the nicest piece of the entire set. (Martin also appears on another tune, a quite successful version of Jim Eanes’ PLUNKIN’ RAG). There are also a couple of tracks featuring Tom Adams (with Dudley Connell (vocals), David McLaughlin (mandolin), Ron Stewart (fiddle) and Marshall Wilbourn (bass): LIVE & LET LIVE and FOX ON THE RUN. A trio of tunes with Bela Fleck are totally over my head, but I assume will appeal to the fans of the progressive & experimental. Other backup musicians include Tony Rice, Rickie Simpkins, Sam Bush, Kenny Smith and Tim Stafford among others. Although not every tune is a masterpiece (DOGGY SALT is kind of pointless, RUN MOUNTAIN is spoiled by a weak vocal, and this version of FOX ON THE RUN does not come close to the versions by Emerson & Waldron or the Country Gentlemen), the overall project is certainly a winner and highly recommended!
